Leesa’s Life

Growing up, my father was a Mr. Fix-It. Give him anything that was broken and he could put it back together. He was able to fix toilets, leaky faucets, etc. around the house with no problem. Heck, he actually built the house that him and my mom live in by himself! Now that’s Handy!!! Growing up with a dad like that, I came to expect a man/husband/father to be able to fix things around the house when they broke.

So, it’s so frustrating to me now to have a husband who is lucky to change a light bulb without instructions. It bugs me to no end that this man can’t fix the small things that are breaking around the house. Every single faucet in this house leaks. His solution isn’t to replace a washer or even to buy and install a new faucet. No. His solution is to shut off the water to that sink. He’ll turn it back on after a few weeks and if it doesn’t drip, he believes it is fixed. We’ve gone through that scenario for the past year. We can’t do it anymore. the drips don’t stop no matter what. I hate to tell him, but it is time to replace the damn faucets! The toilet in our master bath has decided to not stop running. You flush and the water will not shut off. Again, the solution is to shut off the water. When you need to flush, turn the water back on to fill the tank, flush, then shut the water back off. Convenient? Not really. Fixed? In his mind, yep.

So, I decided that if hubby doesn’t have the knowledge to fix these things then I was going to learn to do it myself. I’ve been researching online and have learned what I feel is sufficient. I found that the reason the water keeps running in the toilet is more then likely the fill valve so I bought a replacement. When I got home, I had every intention of installing it. Hubby was home though and he decided that HE would do it (I think it made him feel inferior to have his wife doing something like that). So, he proceeds to go into the bathroom, tear the old innards of the toilet out, shove in the new fill valve without reading the instructions, he turns the water back on, toilet fills and shuts off, so woohoo!!! It’s fixed. Slap the tank cover back on and he’s Mr. Fix-It, all smiles and chest puffed out to here with pride on a job well done……….or so he thought.

Half an hour later, I hear water running so I go into the bathroom to find that, yes, the toilet is running. I took off the tank cover and was shocked to find that when hubby installed the new fill valve he left out the rest of the tank innards. The float is missing, the cap for the overflow is gone, the fill tube isn’t attached to the overflow…OMG! Where is all that stuff? I walked back out to the living room and asked him if he’d installed everything that was in the box and his answer was “No, there were parts left over. I didn’t know where they went and since the water shut off I figured they weren’t needed so I pitched them” What the he**?!?!? Dude, if the parts were in the box then they were probably supposed to be installed. Manufacturers don’t usually put spare parts in their products. I immediately went to the trash to retrieve the missing pieces. Tomorrow I will see if I can fix the thing myself. If not then guess I’ll be looking for a handy man to hire.

Edit:  I was able to salvage the toilet pieces that hubby tossed yesterday and replaced the water fill valve and all necessary parts only to find out that it’s the flapper that needs replaced instead.  Frustrating that a part was replaced unnecessarily but at least now I know exactly why the toilet won’t stop running.  And a flapper is a very easy fix, one that I think hubby could even do (if I would let him…..which I won’t)

I hate that saying!  But it sure is true a lot of the time.  It’s pouring here.  This week, although it is only Wed, has been a nightmare.  Started out with hubby getting into it with one of our employees.  The employee has been written up and is now on probation.  Then, hubby got into it with me over something that was of minor importance, but he is stressed so it bugged him big time.  Thankfully that blew over once he’d had a chance to calm down.  Last night, however, was when the sh** hit the fan.  Employee who is/was on probation, wrecked one of our trucks on his way in for the day.  He was talking/texting on his cell phone (something he’d been warned about, verbally and in writing) while driving back, veered off the road and ended up sideswiping an electric pole and taking out a telephone line.  HE is fine.  Our truck though is a different story.  Driver’s side door smashed, window broken, mirror gone, fender crunched and he tore up the rear suspension when he hit the ditch.  The police were called, a tow truck too, and today we are one employee short and hubby is about ready to lose his mind.  I think we’ve both had about as much as we can handle.  So, it needs to stop raining and the sun needs to start shining…..soon!

I just saw a commercial on ABC Family advertising their 25 Days of Christmas specials.  Seriously?  Already?  Do they not realize that there IS another holiday BEFORE Christmas?  Have they never heard of Thanksgiving?  This is exactly why I get tired of the holiday season.  Anymore, it is shoved at me everywhere I look.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love the holidays.  I just wish it wasn’t pushed on me right after Halloween.

Ever have one of those days when no matter what you do, someone is always mad at you?  I’m having one of those days.  Bad thing is that I’ve only been up for an hour and already have three people annoyed with me.  Even worse, the fact that I didn’t really do anything to make them mad.

Hubby is annoyed because for some reason the payment on our Amex card didn’t show up this morning.  I checked and it is being processed still, but apparantly that isn’t good enough for the hubs and it is somehow my fault that Amex didn’t do their job fast enough to please him.

Son is annoyed because he forgot to do a homework paper last night.  It’s my fault because I didn’t remind him.  Well, he’s 13 years old and perfectly capable of checking to make sure he’s done all his work, right?  But still, he had some grouchy words for his dear mom before he left for school.

And finally, one of our employees is annoyed because the truck broke down on him and he’s running behind.  How this is my fault, I’m still trying to figure out, but apparantly it is and he’s already called the office and left a few messages about it.

Thankfully, I won’t be here much longer.  I go to my second job at 9:30 so will get some much needed peace and quiet there.  I’m really looking forward to it today.  I just hope the annoyance bug hasn’t hit Debbie (boss) too.

Just went out to check the pool cover to see if all the water had been drained off only to find out that we have no water INSIDE the darn pool now! Seems that we had what the pool supply company is calling “the bathtub effect” take place. In other words, as the water on the cover got heavier, it pushed the water inside the pool up and under the top rail, between the walls and out onto the ground…..all…..winter…..long. Now waiting on the water hauling service we used last year to call me back with a price quote. I know it’s going to be way more expensive this year since the cost of fuel has gone up so much. What do you do though? I bought that pool to swim in during the summer, I’m not going to just let it sit there.

EDIT: $35 per load plus $65 per hour, averaging 3 hours per load. That is the quote from the water hauler. I know when he first filled the pool, it took 4 loads. I figure this time will take at least 3 loads. That is going to come to around $690! It only cost us $500 to fill it completely last year!

I’ve had my blog for about 4 years now and this question has always puzzled me. Should I moderate my comments or not? In the beginning, when I first started blogging, I set my comments to only allow registered users to post. This kept spamming and unsavory characters away, but it also made it hard for some of my readers to leave comments because they weren’t registered users. So, about a year ago, I changed the setting to allow any and every one out there to leave comments. It worked well for awhile, but now I’m seeing that I’m getting spammers leaving comments again.

It’s just frustrating. I don’t want to limit those wanting to leave comments, but I’m sick and tired of getting on here and seeing things like “here’s that website where I make all this money. check it out”. What do you guys think? Is there anyway that you know of to moderate comments without excluding some people from leaving them in the first place? Let me know.

I have NEVER had a problem ordering stuff online. That is until now. Found out today that one of the websites that I ordered a gift for hubby from has been known to charge your credit card or whatever and then NEVER send your merchandise. Great. I feel like an idiot, but they really fooled me. They had the little lock in the bottom corner of the order page, it was an https website, etc. After checking my order status though, I’m thinking that it is a scam. And after checking my charge card, well, the order came to $88.18, but the total taken off my card was $97.54. Hmm, doesn’t sound right, does it? So, I called their 800#. This is what I heard: “Hi, you’ve reached our customer service center. Our customer service hours are from 8am-10pm Mon-Fri. Please hold for the next available customer service representative” I hold for a couple of minutes when this chipper little voice comes back on the line and says, “We’re sorry, there’s nobody here right now. Please leave a message and we’ll call you back.” Ok, I have never gotten through to any customer service that wants you to leave a message. Stay on hold for hours on end, yes, but leave a message and they’ll call you back? No, can’t say that I’ve ever done that before. I didn’t leave a message. I hung up. I did call back though. Four more times, to be exact and got the same message each time. Wonderful customer service…NOT! I did call the credit card company and they said that I can get my money back, but I’ll have to go through their fraud section and it might take awhile to do, but at least I’ll get my cash back. I know it could have been worse, but it is still frustrating. I had to make a mad dash to find the dvd’s that I’d ordered from this place and now hope, hope, hope that they get here in time for Christmas. Some people are just real jerks!
